Tension Headaches

You would be hard-pressed to find an adult who has never suffered a headache in his or her life. Headaches are a common experience, generally consisting of a mild, dull ache. A headache will typically go away with some generic pain medication and a bit of time. But, sometimes they won't go away. For some, headaches can become demanding things that cause more throbbing or sharp, tense pain and that pain can occur anywhere in the head, neck, or scalp. These types of headaches are called tension headaches and if you have them, Dr. Mary Reimer at Reimer Wellness Center in Los Altos, CA, can help.

What Are Tension Headaches?

Tension headaches are also referred to as stress headaches and they are the most common type of re-occurring headache reported by adults. Tension headaches range from a dull to sharp pain that feels like a tightness or constant pressure either around your forehead or at the back of your neck or head.

Research and studies have determined that tension headaches are most commonly caused by stress and back or neck strain. Tension headaches can be separated in the following two types:

  • Episodic tension headaches occur repeatedly every month at random times but for upwards of 15 times per month.
  • Chronic tension headaches occur most often in consecutive days within a month and will occur more than 15 days every month.

Our Chiropractor Can Help with Your Tension Headaches

Our local chiropractor can help you both manage the existing pain of tension headaches and reduce the occurrence and severity of future tension headaches. Pain reduction and elimination can be done using spinal manipulation that a trained chiropractor can provide via chiropractic adjustments. These types of adjustments target problem areas to improve spinal function and alleviate stress on the body that contributes to and exacerbates tension headaches.

Chiropractors focus on holistic healing and that means considering all of the lifestyle factors that contribute to tension headaches, including diet, exercise, posture, and environment. When you meet with our chiropractor, she will go through a lifestyle questionnaire with you to help determine if things like extended screen time, certain foods, and your home or work environment (ie excessive light or noise) may be contributing to the reoccurrence of your tension headaches. She will then help you make the right changes and teach exercises that are designed to help you reduce and your eliminate tension headaches.
