Palo Alto Chiropractor Uses Same Technique as Michael Phelps’ Trainer

Chiropractor Dr. Reimer was delighted to see Michael Phelps talk recently about the Graston Technique, which she also uses on several Los Altos patients, particularly those recovering from a sports injury. Our Palo Alto wellness center has the same “little metal crowbars” Phelps described in a recent article for Details magazine. While the term “crowbars” sounds a little extreme, these smooth, stainless steel instruments can help with adhesions and scar tissue that builds up inside of overworked muscles. The result, according to Phelps, is improved muscle performance. And for a guy with 14 gold medals, he ought to know.

Palo Alto and Los Altos Chiropractor Uses the Graston Technique

Dr. Reimer uses the Graston Technique (GT) along with many other chiropractic holistic healing methods to help patients recover from any kind of injury, including a sports injury, from the inside out. Our chiropractor has received advanced training to use these instruments, which are Palo Alto chiropractor uses same techniques as olympic trainersstroked in specific directions and with varying levels of pressure, across particular muscles. Although Phelps described the process as being fairly painful, Dr. Reimer's particular style of practicing Graston Therapy incorporates a process of gradually working into the affected area so as to lessen the intensity of the treatment. The treatment is about the same pressure as a deep tissue massage.

GT has two main goals. First, massaging with the Graston instrument kneads out scar tissue and tight spots in injured muscles. These tight spots are called adhesions—they can hurt and also negatively impact muscle function and range of motion. Impaired muscle elasticity can also pull the musculoskeletal system out of alignment and lead to other problems. Second, the process also stretches the fascia, or connective tissues surrounding the muscles, making it more supple and ready to perform.

While the GT is not indicated for everyone, it certainly helps many patients here in our chiropractic wellness center, particularly those overcoming muscle strains and those who want to prepare for athletic competition through holistic healing techniques. Graston Technique is also a specific type of care that requires training, experience and specific tools. Not all healthcare providers offer this advanced level of care.
