Healing Disc Injuries with Chiropractic Care

Healing Disc Injuries with Chiropractic Care

Reimer Wellness Center can help you relieve your back pain.  Back pain is typically caused by one or more injuries, including herniated discs, nerve entrapment and sciatica.  Until the disc injuries are healed, your back pain will persist.

The vast majority of disc injuries do not require surgery. It is estimated that 99% respond to conservative chiropractic treatment. Why not try noninvasive chiropractic care first. If Dr. Reimer does not see a positive change in your condition within a short time she will make a referral.

Spinal Discs

Spinal discs sit between the vertebrae and cushion them.  They have a fairly tough outer area and a softer middle.  The discs are filled with a nutrient rich fluid that is not blood.  In fact, the spinal discs are bloodless, which means when they get injured, they can be very slow to heal.

Injuries of the Spinal Discs

The most common spinal disc injury is a disc herniation, which is also known at a bulging or slipped discs.  A herniated disc occurs when the inner section of the disc bulges through the outer area.  This can put pressure on the soft tissues and nerve roots in the spine, causing pain, numbness and tingling.  The majority of herniated discs occurs in the lumbar region or lower back.

Herniated discs can cause sciatica and nerve entrapment.  Sciatica is a condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or pinched, which can happen when one or more spinal discs start bulging.  Sciatica causes lower back pain, leg pain and numbness, tingling and burning sensations.  Severe cases result in muscle weakness in the legs.

Nerve entrapment occurs when a nerve becomes pinched or compressed.  Symptoms of nerve entrapment include radiating pain, numbness and loss of range of motion in the affected body part.

Chiropractic Treatment for Spinal Disc Injuries

We offer chiropractic care and massage therapy for disc injuries.  Chiropractic care helps keep the spine and extremity joints in their proper alignment, which reduces inflammation and improves range of motion.  Certain chiropractic techniques can be used to increase the spaces between the vertebrae, which allow the discs to slowly retract and refill with fluid.  Massage therapy helps reduce overall muscle pain and improves circulation.  It also releases endorphins, which help control pain.
