Stretches for Your Neck

Neck pain is a common problem, with 15% of people experiencing neck pain for at least one day in a 3-month period. Neck pain can be uncomfortable and interfere with your daily activities. At Reimer Wellness Center in Los Altos, CA, we offer chiropractic care for neck pain. However, neck stretches performed at home can relieve neck pain caused by muscle tension.

Forward and Back Stretch

This stretch can be performed seated or standing. Tilt your chin down towards your neck and hold the position for 15-30 seconds. Lift your head back up and relax for a moment. Then tilt your head back and look at the ceiling and hold the position for 15-30 seconds. Repeat the stretch 5 times.

Side Tilt

Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Lean your head to one side pulling your ear towards your shoulder. Do not raise your shoulder. Hold for 10-15 seconds. Come back to center, and repeat the motion tilting your head to the other side. Perform 10 repetitions.

Side Stretch

This can be performed sitting or standing. Sit straight with your neck in alignment with your shoulders. Turn your head attempting to look over your shoulder, keeping the rest of your body facing forward. Hold it for 10-15 seconds and repeat the motion on the other side. Repeat the stretch 10 times.

Shoulder Roll

Tension in the muscles between the neck and shoulder can also cause neck pain. You should perform this stretch standing. Raise your shoulders then move them forward rotating them in a small circle. Repeat this six times. Then move your shoulders back making small circles. Perform this six times.
