Sciatica FAQs

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a painful condition caused by compression of the sciatic nerve located in your spine. This nerve runs from your lower back through your buttocks and down your legs. When pressure is placed on any part of the sciatic nerve, you can experience pain. Sciatica pain can be mild or severe, depending on the source of your pain.

What Are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

Sciatica symptoms may differ from one person to another. Most people, however, experience pain that generally starts in their back and shoots down the back of their legs. Some people feel intense pain similar to an electric shock. Others may experience dull, achy pain that eventually passes on.

Sitting for long periods of time can trigger pain, as can coughing or sneezing. Other symptoms include numbness, weakness, and tingling in one of your legs. Sciatica symptoms are usually felt on only one side of your body.

What’s Causing My Sciatica Pain?

Sciatica can be caused by a variety of medical conditions like herniated discs, back injuries, spinal stenosis, or muscle and joint strains. Pregnancy and childbirth can affect your sciatic nerve, causing pain, just like spinal misalignments do. Anytime bones, joints, or muscles compress your sciatic nerve, you can experience sciatica pain.

How Do I Know I Have Sciatica?

Our Los Altos chiropractor can diagnose sciatica by performing a comprehensive physical exam. We may also take x-rays or an MRI to confirm your condition. Once we’ve determined the source of your pain, we can outline a plan for treatment.

What’s Involved in Chiropractic Sciatica Treatment?

At Reimer Wellness Center, we utilize chiropractic techniques and other natural therapies to treat sciatica pain and help you find relief. If your sciatica is caused by muscle or joint pressure on the sciatic nerve, adjustments will alleviate this pressure to reduce pain. Spinal adjustments also correct problems with misalignments that are restricting your movements and causing pain.

We may also use corrective exercises to help alleviate your nerve compression, strengthen your muscles and help restore your mobility. Ice therapy and ultrasound can also be helpful in managing pain and helping you heal.
