What It Is Arthritis and How It Is Diagnosed

Arthritis is often thought of by the general public as one disorder, when if fact its symptoms can be caused by over 100 different conditions. The common ground between all of these ailments is painful joint inflammation and swelling that affects the joint's function. Medical X-rays can confirm the presence of arthritis in a joint, while in some cases blood tests can also help diagnose the condition.

Arthritis Causes and Effects

The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. These two conditions have different causes. Osteoarthritis is caused by the deterioration of the cartilage that normally cushions the joint's bone ends and keeps them from rubbing together. Age-related wear and tear, severe overuse, or an acute injury can all result in osteoarthritis. As the cartilage breaks down, the friction between the bones increases, causing pain and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by chronic inflammation; it's usually related to an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the joint lining. This creates pain and swelling that may occur in bouts, eventually resulting in deformity.

Our Chiropractor Can Help You Manage Your Arthritis

Drugs can provide only a temporary respite from your arthritis symptoms -- which is why you should pay a visit to Reimer Wellness Center. Our chiropractor, Dr. Mary Reimer, will administer the necessary X-rays to examine the extent of the joint problem while asking you about your symptoms and checking your medical history. We can then create a treatment program aimed at your particular form of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis responds well to chiropractic adjustments. These adjustments, when repeated over a series of several weeks, can significantly reduce your joint pain. In some cases, gentle, careful adjustments can also help people with rheumatoid arthritis. Massage therapy is also very useful for managing arthritis symptoms. These treatments improve circulation and drainage to reduce swelling and inflammation. We may add a gentle exercise routine to your treatment plan to help keep the joint as mobile as possible.
