Swedish Massage vs. Deep Tissue Massage

Swedish Massage vs Deep Tissue Massage: Which Should I Choose?

Woman getting a massage

Massage is both a luxurious treat you can give yourself, as well as an important step you can take to improve your overall health. There are many different types of massage, too. While most of them have distinctive features, the two that often get clients confused are Swedish massage and deep tissue massage. They are so similar in description as to almost seem like the same thing. However, there are important distinctions. If you are wondering whether you should get a Swedish massage or a deep tissue massage, and need some clarification as to the differences, here is a handy guide. Knowing the differences helps you know which one is best for you.

The Difference Between Swedish Massage and Deep Tissue Massage

Swedish Massage--Although it is referred to as Swedish, this variety of massage is not particular to Sweden. In fact, it is the original "western" variety of massage, developed when this Asian and Middle Eastern technique made its way to Europe and North America. Swedish massage uses long, firm strokes and plenty of kneading, with the main purposes being to increase circulation and bring about deep relaxation.

The pressure used is really guided by you and what you prefer, so it can range from light to strong and deep. However, even the deepest pressure does not go as deep as with deep tissue massage. And, a deep pressure isn't always best. It all depends on the individual person. Some people are not built to take a really deep massage, while deep is perfect for others. Body size, shape, composition, and overall health all make a difference in the degree of pressure someone should receive.

When you get Swedish massages regularly, you receive numerous benefits. These include better circulation, lowered blood pressure, better and stronger immunity, and less stress (including reversal of the effects of stress). You may also feel more energetic, more relaxed, less stressed, and much healthier when you get Swedish massage on a regular basis.

Deep Tissue Massage--Deep tissue massage incorporates many elements of Swedish massage, but uses them differently, and for different purpose. Pressure is usually deeper than with Swedish massage, but not always. Much of that is down to individual preference. A massage therapist doesn't want to go so deep they cause their client pain. While Swedish massage stretches and lengthens the muscles, deep tissue massage stretches the fascia (the connective tissue that supports the muscles). This type of massage gradually works down through layers of tissue until the deepest accessible layer is reached. Once this layer is reached, it can be manipulated to do such things as improve posture, break up adhesions and scar tissue, bring better circulation to deep layers for quicker healing of injuries, improve and eliminate inflammation, relieve pain, and relax chronically tense muscles. All of this leads to improved health and wellbeing.
